Screen Printing 101: What You Need to Know About This Classic Print Method

Pegasus-74 (2)

When it comes to customizing apparel and promotional products, screen printing has long been a favorite method. Whether you're looking to create custom T-shirts for a company event or promotional gear for your business, screen printing offers durability, vibrant colors, and a professional finish. But what exactly is screen printing, and when should you choose it over other methods like sublimation or embroidery? Let’s break it down.

What is Screen Printing?

Screen printing is a method where ink is pushed through a mesh stencil (or "screen") onto fabric or other materials. Each color in the design requires a separate screen and pass of ink. The design is applied one layer at a time, which allows for bold, long-lasting prints that can withstand repeated washing.

The result? High-quality, vibrant designs that pop and last!

What Works Best for Screen Printing?

Screen printing is ideal for:

  • T-Shirts & Hoodies: Bulk orders for events, team uniforms, or company apparel.
  • Canvas Bags: Durable prints for giveaways or merch.
  • Sweatshirts & Jackets: Bold logos or designs that need to stand out.
  • Flat Surfaces: Items where the screen can easily lay flush, such as towels or aprons.

When to Consider Other Methods

While screen printing is versatile, it does have some limitations. If your project involves any of the following, consider sublimation or embroidery instead:

  • Highly Detailed, Multi-Colored Images: If you have a complex design with gradients or a lot of colors (like a photo), sublimation printing may be a better fit.
  • Polyester or Performance Fabrics: Sublimation works better for synthetic materials, as the dye bonds directly with the fibers.
  • Luxury, Textured, or Durable Designs: For a high-end, professional look (like corporate polos or hats), embroidery offers a raised, tactile finish that screen printing can’t achieve.
  • The Cost Factor: Why More Colors = Higher Price

With screen printing, each color requires its own screen and ink pass. That means:

  • Simple, 1-Color Designs: These are the most cost-effective and quick to produce.
  • Multi-Color Designs: The more colors you add, the more screens and time needed, increasing the cost.

To keep costs down, stick to 1-3 colors for logos or designs, especially for bulk orders.
